Understanding peripheral neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition resulting from damage to the nerves in your feet & hands. Symptoms usually begin in the form of tingling, or numbness sensations. For some, it can begin as throbbing pain, or intense burning. As the nerve degeneration advances, symptoms can include painful walking, as if you are walking on rocks. Eventually, the nerve damage will progress to the form of muscle weakness and loss of balance. This can be very dangerous because it can lead to unnecessary falls & other injuries.

Neuropathy starts off as damage to the outer layer of the nerve. This is called the Myelin Sheath. In many cases, this damage can be reversed, if caught early enough, but unfortunately, most people wait too long. By this time, the nerve fibers have also been damaged.

Peripheral neuropathy is dangerous and nerves can become permanently damaged. It is absolutely vital to seek treatment before it is too late.

According to the National Institute of Health, 1 in 11 adults suffer from peripheral neuropathy and this number rises for people over 45 years of age.
